Amir Khan’s wife Faryal defends fleeing robbery scene: ‘I’m a mother before anything’

Boxing champion Amir Khan and his wife Faryal Makhdoom appeared on Good Morning Britain to discuss the horrific armed robbery that happened as they enjoyed a night out with friends in London on Monday.

Faryal, 30, revealed that while she hoped Amir, 35, would be safe as the frightening incident took place, her first instinct was to stay safe herself.

Explaining that she has faced trolling for the decision, the mum of three explained that she fled for the sake of their children, daughters Lamaisah, seven, and Alayna, four, and their one year old son Muhammad Zaviyar.

“You know, I have kids I’m a mother before anything,” said the Pakistani-American celebrity, who wed Bolton-born Amir in 2013. They later split but were reconciled.

“I’m a mother and God forbid anything would happen to me here… You know, what would happen to my kids?”

The robbery saw Amir’s £72,000 watch snatched after the couple dined at a restaurant in Leyton, East London.

While discussing the horrifying ordeal, Amir backed his wife’s actions and said his over-riding concern was that Faryal would get hurt during the frightening attack.

“God forbid the person shot the gun and it hit my wife,” Amir revealed. “I’m so happy that Faryal ran back and she she she made it away from that scene because anything could have happened.”

And the sports star pointed out that it wasn’t just the armed robbers who could have hurt his wife, as she “could have been hit by a car” as she fled.

He added: “Faryal did take a lot of hate on social media saying ‘why did Amir’s wife run away from the scene?’”

“I couldn’t do anything different,” Faryal explained. “You know, I couldn’t get involved and get shot as well. Yeah, I think it’s quite hurtful when you hear comments like that.

“Who knows how it feels or how to handle the situation any different? And, you know, my instinct was obviously hoping Amir’s safe but it was my children…”

Amir admitted that his wife wasn’t happy about him wearing expensive jewellery, but explained that he likes to reward himself after boxing bouts.

He said: “For the last 15 years I’ve been wearing a nice watch, I give myself a little watch after a fight.”

But he admitted to being freaked out by the way the robbery took place.

Amir said: “I’ve never ever said no to anyone asking for a picture, in the restaurant lots of people came over to me asking for pictures and stuff….To get a gun, have a car ready and then to know the timing of me leaving the restaurant and to be there, at the same time.

“It can’t just happen like that so there are a lot of questions out there. But the main thing is we are both safe.”

And Faryal added that she understood her husband’s desire to have nice things, after working hard, stating: “You know if you work hard you should be able to treat yourself… you never think this would happen, it’s a really big wake up call. I don’t think you can really walk the streets of London wearing expensive watches.”

Boxer Amir, who took part in I’m A Celebrity….Get Me Out of Here! in 2019, revealed that despite initially criticising London Mayor Sadiq Khan after the incident, he’d love to do what he can to help eradicate some of the nation’s issues with violence.

“I think it’d be good to do something with the government…I’d love to do that because we just want to make England a safer place,” he said. “I haven’t got a watch on me now in case someone comes at me in alleyways. I do honestly feel very unsafe when I’m walking around London, England because it is very dangerous out there. Please keep safe, stay safe.”
