Dancing On Ice’s Bez makes show history as he wears crash helmet for performance

Dancing On Ice contestant Bez made show history on Sunday’s launch episode as he wore a watermelon patterned crash helmet for his performance.

The Happy Mondays star, 57, who is partnered with professional skater Angela Egan, is the first-ever contestant to wear a helmet for his “own protection” on the ice.

Bez performed to his own hit Step On where he paid homage to the lyrics “you’re twistin’ my melon man” by having a watermelon-themed routine complete with maracas.

The star, who was supported by bandmate Shaun Ryder in the audience, received 12.5 out of 40 from the four judges – Jayne Torvill, Christopher Dean, Oti Mabuse and Ashley Banjo.

It comes after Bez revealed that he had been forced to wear a helmet during training for the ITV show following a series of nasty accidents on the rink.

Speaking to OK! and other press outlets earlier this week, he explained: “I’ve been doing some spectacular falls, mostly involving my head crashing into the ice. I wear a helmet, so nothing too serious.

“I’ve had a few [injuries], nothing major, but I’m quite bruised and battered.”
