From code names to ‘deconstructing’ her voice: Heather Small spills biggest Masked Singer behind-the-scenes secrets

Heather Small has revealed some of the behind-the-scenes secrets of The Masked Singer after having featured on the current series.

Heather, 57, was the first to leave the show on New Year’s day, bringing her time as the iconic Chandelier to an end.

While she was the first to leave, the British singer, known for songs like Moving On Up and Proud, said the programme is a guessing game more than it is a singing competition, and quipped that if it was the other way round, she’d have “had something to say” about being the first contestant to go.

Heather also revealed some of the backstage secrets of the show, including double code names, during a chat with OK! Online.

“No one has any idea who anyone is,” she told us. “They’re so good. You have more than one code name, like a code name within a code name, the show is called something completely different from what the show is. They go to great lengths to keep everything under wraps.”

“They’re genius at it,” Heather continued, as she suggested some of the team behind the hit ITV show should join MI5.

Heather also revealed that the celebs are allowed to choose their own characters, and she chose the Chandelier because she liked the “shininess” of it, and how it looked in the light.

As to how she tried to disguise her well-known voice, Heather explained that through the help of her vocal coach, she completely “deconstructed” the way she’d usually sing.

She said: “What I do, I sing with an oval mouth and everything I normally do I changed.

“I sang with my voice horizontal, I tried to sing more with my head voice, rather than from my diaphragm, and I chose songs that people wouldn’t associate me with. I was so successful at that, they didn’t guess it was me at all.”

The Just for You singer also revealed that she’d been asked to do the show in the past, but declined because she initially thought it would be too difficult to disguise her voice. However, after seeing the likes of Joss Stone take part, she decided to give it a go.

Heather also cited the pandemic as a reason she decided to take part because she knew it would be good fun.

“After the couple of years that we’ve had, I thought some fun is in order,” she told us.

“It’s light entertainment. Entertainment you can do with your children and your grandchildren, so I thought, you know what, I’ll do it.”

Heather added: “I saw Joss Stone and Gabrielle do it and say it was so much fun, so I thought I’ll try it.”
