Kate Garraway’s husband Derek’s ‘hero’ carer praised for looking after family

Kate Garraway‘s new ITV documentary Caring for Derek has been met with praise from viewers, who couldn’t help but call their carer Jake a “hero” for how he’s been helping the family.

Derek, 54, returned home in April 2021 after spending a year in hospital fighting for his life after contracting coronavirus in 2020, which has since left him battling a number of ongoing health issues.

In Kate’s documentary, which aired on Tuesday 22 February, Kate, also 54, showed the realities of the work that goes into making sure Derek is comfortable and well taken care of.

However, caring for another person can take a toll, which is exactly what Jake, the incredible carer, believes has happened to Kate.

In one scene, the carer was asked how Kate has been doing, to which he replied: “I feel Kate is an unbelievable human, but there is a part of care that is called self-neglect when individuals pay too much attention in the wellbeing of their partner that they even forget about taking care of themselves.

“In Kate’s situation, I think she will need to try and slow down a bit. A bit of sleep would help, maybe some food. I know she wouldn’t want me to say this but she should have some food. She should eat.”

Fans flocked to Twitter to praise Jake as one person wrote: “How wonderful is Jake. He loves his job. And he is right, at some point in our life every one of us will need a carer. I just hope for one as amazing as him. #CaringForDerek”.

“#CaringForDerek. Loved this program. So moving. Billy loves his dad so much it seeps out of him. Wishing Kate and Derek the very best of luck for recovery and happiness. Jake the Carer #hero,” another chimed with a red heart emoji.

While a fourth added: “Continue to pray for your good health Derek and Kate’s strength to continue. And well done to carer who in many ways has become part of that family! #CaringForDerek”.

Elsewhere in the documentary, Kate tearfully admitted that she is “really struggling” and that despite hoping for a “happy ending”, it feels “unsustainable”.

Speaking to the camera, the presenter said: “It feels like in terms of communication, he’s gone way back from this time last year. I mean, he could express fears and worries and all sorts of things this time last year. Whereas now, it’s ‘yes’, ‘no’, ‘don’t know’ again.”

Kate, whose husband took a secret trip to Mexico for treatment, added: “People are being really kind and say I’m an inspiration, but I’m really struggling. And I think it’s important for people to know that because I’m sure they’re struggling in their life too in whatever way things have been flung at them.

Kate Garraway emotionally admitted that she feels "terribly lonely" and that she still hopes for a "happy ending" with her husband Derek Draper during her powerful documentary Caring For Derek on Tuesday
Kate said she feels “lonely”

“I think one of the worst things is the terrible loneliness that you get from having him here but not here. It’s really indescribable, actually, it’s… I don’t know, it’s just so hard.

“Because I can sort of see him but he’s absent and you just feel very much on your own all the time. He doesn’t look at you for a cup of tea.”

Kate added: “I still hope we’ll have a happy ending but ultimately it just feels unsustainable.”
