Kate Middleton takes style notes from Princess Diana to become a leading Royal

When it comes to The British Royal Family there is no denying that they are one of the most stylish families in the world.

The Queen regularly brightens the way with her bold and colourful outfits and others such as Princess Beatrice and Sophie, Countess Of Wessex follow with their chic looks, however, there is undoubtedly one lady who has taken the lead and has become a firm fashion favourite.

Since Kate Middleton joined the family after marrying Prince William in 2011, The Duchess has continued to take style notes from her late Mother In Law Princess Diana to land herself the title of the most stylish member of the monarchy.

Whether it’s paying tribute through similar outfits or re-wearing some of the Princesses most valued items, Kate has certainly solidified her position as Royal fashion influencer.

One of the first lessons in which The Duchess took from Diana was to stick with familiar designers so that you build a recognisable, signature style.

Whilst Princess Diana worked with designers such as Catherine Walker, Kate tends to stick to British names whether they be high end or high street. Alexander McQueen and Jenny Packham are firm designer faves and Zara, Reiss and Boden for more affordable looks.

In 2018 we saw Kate embark on a tour of Sweden and take a daring fashion risk with a bold red and white houndstooth Catherine Walker coat dress.

This had a very distinctive match to when Princess Diana sported the same pattern in 1990 when herself and a young Prince William attended the christening of Diana’s niece.

There is no doubt that the bold print is still as fashionable today.

When it comes to high class royal events, Kate never fails to disappoint with her endless array of princess-style gowns.

Another where we saw a direct reference to Princess Diana was in December 2019, when Kate sported a black velvet dress by Alexander McQueen. It perfectly emulated Diana’s iconic blue velvet ‘Travolta’ dress from November 1985 but was a little less daring on the shoulders.

Kate has paid tribute to Diana on multiple occasions but this has to be one of our favourite outfits.

In addition to this, Kate has also taken notes in terms of finding a feminine pattern that flatters you and works on countless occasions-take the humble polka dot. A statement collar has also become a signature of Kate’s just like her late Mother In Law.

Princess Diana wowed at home in Kensington Palace in 1985 in a blue polka dot dress with a white peter pan-style collar, where as two decades later in 2019, Kate flawed us all in a almost perfect match from designer Alessandra Rich for a visit to Bletchley.

Not only does this look great but it’s also a very fashion forward move for The Royal Family as they take onboard trends from the catwalks and in turn inspire others to follow suit.

One style tip in particular that Kate has evolved is the strategic use of clutch bags.

Whilst Princess Diana used hers as a clever hack to cover her cleavage when exiting a car so that there were no risqué tabloid shot’s, Kate has used them in another way.

The Duchess uses her handbags in order to hide her nerves or awkwardness when shaking someone’s hand so that she is seen to be composed and professional.

Another lesson Kate is a fan of is paying homage to The Royal Families legacy by sporting items of jewellery belonging to them.

Princess Diana done this on many occasions and naturally The Duchess has followed suit.

For Prince Philip‘s funeral in April 2021, Kate wore the iconic four-tiered pearl choker that Princess Diana and The Queen wore previously to pay tribute to Her Majesty.
