Neighbours ‘axed after 40 years’ as iconic Australian soap set to end

Neighbours has reportedly been cancelled after 40 years despite the long-running Australian soap being a fan-favourite on the air for nearly four decades.

Fans will have to get their fill of Ramsay Street as according to a source, the show is set to close its residents’ doors for the very last time.

What’s more, according to the source the cast and crew, who are based in the city of Melbourne, haven’t even been told the news yet.

The soap first came onto screens back in 1985, and is reportedly set to end this August, despite cast and crew not having been informed yet.

A source told The Sun: “The cast and crew in Melbourne haven’t been told about the decision.

“They will be devastated. Neighbours is an institution people grew up with.”

The reported reason behind the axe is due to the soap costing too much to film for the revenue it brings in.

According to the source, Channel 5 pay Fremantle Australia millions of pounds annual to help keep it on the air, but it’s simply not enough.

“Channel 5 pay Fremantle Australia many millions of pounds every year.

“[But] sadly, there’s a shortfall of about £5million in what it brings back in through advertising,” the insider went on.

“There’s a lot of disbelief and sadness among those who know it’s ending.”

Channel 5 executives are said to have been in talks with the Australian network thinking of ways to keep the soap in action, but they weren’t able to reach a satisfactory deal.

What’s more, the long-running serial drama is thought not to be bringing in enough money from advertising.

There is still hope that things could change, but in the meantime, the source claimed that Neighbours producers are trying to think of a way to end the soap with its best and most explosive storyline yet.
